You may have heard via school district communications or in recent news that the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Washington State Department of Health (DOH) and the Yakima Health District have all updated their recommendations for physical distancing between students in certain situations. The current guidelines recommend at least 3’ feet of spacing in classrooms (previously 6’). This will allow schools to provide more in-person teaching opportunities.
The East Valley School District’s first priority is the safety of our students, staff and community. Our district administrators have been advocating for and planning for resuming all day, in-person learning for many months. Our goal is to bring all students back April 26, 2021 (preK-12), however we can only move secondary (6-12 grades) to all-day if our county can achieve the metrics set by the CDC and DOH. Their recommendations include that in areas with high community transmission, middle and high school students must use cohorting (grouping students) and at least 3’ feet of distance between students or at least 6’ if cohorting isn’t possible. CDC defines high community transmission as more than 200 cases per 100,000 population over 14 days or test positivity greater than 10%. Based on the fact that we are not able to cohort our middle and high school students, we may have to wait to expand all day, in-person instruction at the middle school and high school until our case rates are below 200 cases per 100,000 over 14 days. While we are working hard to get students back in their classrooms all day by April 26th, there is still much to be done over the next couple of weeks. Our planning committee will be organizing transportation schedules (busing schedules), food service (where and how students will receive/eat their lunches), and setting up classrooms (adding desks and furniture that were removed to create more space in the classrooms to allow for 6’ distancing). With more students attending all day, in person school, our virtual only learning format will change. Details are still being decided on how virtual only will operate at the different grade levels (preK-5 and 6-12). We ask that our parents notify their school as soon as possible if you wish to change from your current instructional format as a result of this updated guidance so we can plan accordingly.
Finally, the East Valley School District would like to thank you…our families, for your flexibility, patience and grace while we navigate these changing guidelines.
