Student School Board Representatives Receive Orientation
We are excited to welcome East Valley High School juniors Juliana Romo and Karly Monteith as they join Sylus Selberg in serving our East Valley Board of Directors as Student Representatives. These outstanding students will share in the role of reporting student news and announcements to our Board of Directors and then report back to their peers with District news and announcements. These non-voting positions will continue on into their senior year.
Seth Basford Becomes Official
Our newest member of the East Valley Board of Directors, Seth Basford, was sworn in and completed the oath of office. Mr. Basford will fill the role of Director of District 3 until the reelection in November 2019.
Special Report – YMCA Aquatic Center
Rick Fairbrook of the Yakima Valley YMCA spoke to our Board of Directors and District administrators about the impact our local YMCA has had in the community and about their upcoming project to build the new Chesterley Park Aquatic Center.
The YMCA aims to strengthen our community by providing several services to our local youth, families and senior citizens. Among these services are regular fitness classes and workout facilities, youth sports teams, mentoring programs, Camp Dudley, summer day camps and full-day and after school childcare. The YMCA currently offers BASE (after school childcare) at both Terrace Heights Elementary and East Valley Elementary School for our East Valley students.

Construction Report
The East Valley Central Auxiliary Gym project is nearing completion and is expected to be done by early November. The state legislature has still not come to an agreement and passed the Capital Budget. In response, as a District, we have pulled our bid for the project off the street and will reinstate the bid for the high school project as soon as the legislature passes the Capital Budget.
East Valley CTE Overview
Linda Thomas provided an overview of the East Valley CTE programs including how they plan to use the Carl D. Perkins Vocational and Technical Grant funds to strengthen our CTE programs at both East Valley Central and East Valley High School, including the addition of new Business & Marketing course offerings and the purchase of essential equipment and software for CTE courses.
GEAR UP Heads to EVC
Superintendent, John Schieche, shared information pertaining to our new GEAR UP grant with our Board of the Directors as follows:
Our new GEAR UP program will begin this year with our current 6th and 7th grade student bodies, attending East Valley Central. Our anticipated grant allocation is approximately $217,000 annually over the course of the next seven years. A work plan is currently being established by the East Valley School District in collaboration with district employees funded by the GEAR UP program. This work plan will determine how to best utilize these generous funds to benefit the needs of our diverse learners, while meeting the objectives of the GEAR UP program and to promote STEM education and careers.
The University of Washington's GEAR UP program aims to accomplish four major outcomes:
-To support students enrolling in and successfully completing academic rigorous coursework.
- Provide college financial aid information to students.
- Increase the % of students graduating from high school.
- Increase the % of students enrolling in & attending postsecondary education.
