JCLC (JROTC Cadet Leadership Challenge)

JCLC is an opportunity to experience the busyness of the army and how it effects their daily lives. With wake-up in the morning at 0430 and lights out at 2200. The day is full of adventure, strategy, team-building exercises, physical fitness, and leadership skills. Cadets are dressed in full Army Combat Uniforms.

All cadets have responsibilities while at JCLC. Cadets can be chosen as brigade staff, company commanders, and company 1SGs.

Cadets among the several schools that attend are divided amongst the four companies. Alpha CO, Bravo CO, Charlie CO, and Delta CO. Each company has a Company Commander (CC), and a company First Sergeant (1SG). Each Company is made up of 4 squads and each squad has 10-11 cadets each, each squad has a squad leader.

Along with the four companies, there is a battalion staff. The staff is made of J-Officers, J-1 to J-6, as well as a Battalion Commander, Battalion 1SG, and a Battalion XO.
Events at JCLC:
  • 1 Rope Bridge: A squad of cadets working together to tie a rope across and over an body of water to move their squad across. One cadet, the swimmer, takes one end of the rope and swims across and ties the rope opposite of the team, across the body of water. The team, except one, hooks their harness to the rope and works their way to the other side. The last cadet unties the rope and swims back to their squad on the other side of the water. The rope is usually tied between two points 50(?) feet apart.
  • Knot Tying: A company during knot tying will learn the different knots, common and not as common. Cadets learn as simple as the square knot, and knots such as.......
  • Obstacle Course: The obstacle course is a series of 'events'. Starting off with a rope climb, and reaching the end by maneuvering over and under a series of bars, ropes; hoisting themselves over an angled piece of wood that stands taller than the cadets. Finishing off with swinging on a rope over a taller bar.
  • Rappel Tower: Going down the largest rappel tower in the west coast, the rappel tower stand at 60 feet. Cadets face their fears and find confidence in themselves as they go down. There is also a free fall of cadets choose to be adventurous.
  • Army Combat Readiness Test (ACRT): Starting off with a quarter mile run, to a low crawl, ammo can carry along raised wooden planks, and agility obstacles, a liter carry, and a tire flip. The cadets are moving nonstop going through the ACRT.
  • Map Reading + Land Nav.: Starting off in a classroom based environment, the cadets learn the basics of map reading; where things are on a map, using the map, and using a compass and protractor. The map reading is crucial to the land navigation. A company at land navigation is split by squads. The squads are then given a map and a set of coordinates that they have to find using a map and protractor. There are stamps at the coordinate points that they mark on their paper.
  • First Aid/Med Training: First Aid and medical training involves learning how to splint fractures, apply tourniquets effectively, and basic first aid knowledge and training.
  • Lane Training/Medevac Training: A scenario based training where it combines all of the skills from the events as a 'final' type of event. From first aid, to the litter carry, it may be moderately intense for some cadets who have not experienced it before.
